Now then, a new challenge is upon us. What with this global credit crunch, it's no longer financially viable to stick two fingers up at the boss and jump on a plane into the unknown. To this end, I've done the next best thing. I've sent one of the '30' books off on a trip instead!

See the 'Booky30' blog for details of it's journey!

Route 13

‘Route 13’ from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng has become notorious for armed vehicle ambushes by rebels in recent years, causing several deaths. As you can imagine, there is a huge sense of fun and excitement when we board a ‘Super VIP’, big, pink 'shoot at me' bus, with only a fifteen year old boy clutching a machine gun for protection (although I think I caught sight of a sawn off under the drivers seat and he looked pretty handy). The driver is playing ‘I’m never going to dance again’ by Wham over the PA system and, if things don’t go according to plan, then none of us will be. The legroom on the bus is already minimal (another reason why we may never dance again) but the chap in front of me makes matters a little more uncomfortable by lowering his seat back and crushing both my kneecaps;  the ‘Big Pink Fun Bus’ tears through the Lao countryside, stopping only briefly for some noodle soup. The air-con packs up shortly after our lunch break and we arrive into Vang Vieng on a very hot and smelly bus indeed. The trip has gone off without any bloody battles (I wouldn't have minded a little one, just to get some nice photos as a keepsake) and we’re emptied onto a massive, desolate tarmac airstrip. A woman sprints toward us and tells us we must stay at her guesthouse for 2 US dollars a night. It’s a little pricey but it sounds like a direct order, so we reluctantly accept.
